The Manila Street Astronomers are weekend amateur astronomers. Because of this, today is its last day of participation in GAM 2015. But what a way to end the celebration though – with a bang and not a whimper. The sky was clear all throughout the night. We not only showed the public Jupiter and the almost First Quarter Moon but also Saturn. We may not have been able to join the hangoutathon because of poor internet connection but the event tonight was thrice the “oohs” and “aahs.”

Today is also my 49th birthday. Spending your birthday conducting a free telescope viewing may sound a little too dedicated for some, but given the choice, this is the way I would really want to celebrate all my coming birthdays henceforth. In fact, today’s event got me a little contemplative. I looked up at Jupiter and Saturn and the Moon and waxed a little poetic whispering to myself, “If you allow me the grace to choose how I go, grant me this – let me go conducting a free telescope viewing.”

The highest form of amateur astronomy is public outreach. This is the founding principle of the Manila Street Astronomers. Our mantra will always be “The true value of a telescope is how many people have viewed the heavens through it.” – John L. Dobson
