GLOBAL ASTRONOMY MONTH – STELLARIUM SOFTWARE REPORT

City: Chennai

Date: 17/04/2020

Global Astronomy Month (GAM), organized in April every year by Astronomers Without Borders, is the world's largest global celebration of astronomy. For this year, SPACE has suggested several GAM events for conduction by SPACE associated schools.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Total number of participants 600.
  • Understanding how to plan for astronomical observation.
  • This program motivated the participants to make use of this international opportunity provided by SPACE for planning astronomical observation through Stellarium
  • Participants were trained well and the concepts were made clear for performing the planetary alignment of Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars observation from their home.
  • Participants observed this event personally in their residence and clicked photographs and shared with us.

DESCRIPTION:

Participants understood about simulation software stellarium, its settings and features like how to set the location, directions, rise time and set time of celestial objects. Identify constellation names, lines and art. They also learnt how to search for their desired objects like planets, galaxies, nebulae, etc.

Participants understood how to plan their astronomical observations and track the celestial events by Time, Day, Month and Year.

Students also understood planetary alignment of Saturn, Mars and Jupiter with Moon using stellarium software and also performed real time observation.
