InOMN 2010 Nicaragua, Brief Report

On Saturday, September 18th, 2010, the Nicaraguan Amateur Astronomers Society (ANASA) took position on Galerias Santo Domingo, a public and crowded mall in the outskirts of Managua, Nicaragua. The event was publicized on ANASA's Facebook page, Twitter, ClickManagua and Galerías Santo Domingo. Carrying AWB's small buttons over our chest next to ANASA's logo, with 4 telescopes in the ranges of 3, 4.5, 6 and 12 inches and a compilation of multimedia material related to the Moon exploration by LRO, Kaguya and Apollo; ANASA spent more than 3 hours attending more than 400 visitors at the location. The clouds menaced the... Read More...

MOON THROUGH CLOUDS!... InOMN in Iraq

There was clouds, a heavy one right after noon of September 18.2010, it takes only few hours after a thunder storm with heavy showers, local dusty strong wind blow and then muddy rain! We were hopeless for a little while to see Moon again after cloudy dusk, but we decide to take the telescope inside Minara Central Park in Erbil city at 06:00 pm local. Inside the park there was too many people, they looks like waiting for an exciting event! And then…Clouds passed away and Moon light comes back again, the view of Moon through clouds and through the... Read More...

Iraqis and Gulf people together…Welcomed the Giant Planet!

It was truly very wonderful evening and very different than in the (InOMN) event at 09/18/2010. Jupiter, was at the closest point to Earth on 20 and 09.21.2010 and the title of this activity was (Let's Welcome the Giant), and proudly joined us (Emirates mobile Astronomical Observatory) which designed and made by the pride of amateur astronomers (Nizar Sallam) and the active astronomical researcher from Bahrain (Ali Al-Hijre), who also initiated the process of monitoring Jupiter at that evening. Before beginning, I made a Skype contact with (Mike Simmons), president of (Astronomers without Borders) and with active amateur astronomer (John... Read More...

International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) 2010

Hello all, Yesterday september started earlier in the late afternoon ; I went to Dinant in the Ardennes to join a Moon party! The Cercle Astronomique Mosan organized a Moon observation Night, thanks to its most Moon fan member, Albert De Bruijn, called "Moonwalker" ! He had planned a game for visitors using their refractor in the observatory and an eyepiece with graduation. The purpose was to measure a distance within Crater Ptolemaeus; they found 88 km when the real distance is 96 km which was quite a feat! http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/astroraoul/2010CAMInOMN # Movies: http://www.youtube.com/user/Astroraoul?gl=FR&hl=fr#p/a/u/2/GkBIx1NXaKk http://www.youtube.com/user/Astroraoul?gl=FR&hl=fr#p/a/u/1/5-2zfkF8V7c http://www.youtube.com/user/Astroraoul?gl=FR&hl=fr#p/a/u/0/FF_R9_hRnvU The observatory doesn't have internet... Everything is ready for the International Observe the Moon Night 2010 in Nicaragua

With only few hours to go, ANASA is ready to participate in the largest Lunar Observing event of the World in 2010. If weather permits, we will install 4 telescopes for public moongazing and a fifth one for live broadcasting of the surface of the Moon. In case weather decides to play with us, we have a Plan B in place: to show videos about LRO, LCROSS and Kaguya and to educate about the Moon and the importance of water on her surface. ANASA's FaceBook page is already showing the following add: By the time I write this, I was... Read More...

How Haggai Institute Has Influenced a Brazilian Astronomer

A Brazilian astronomer, Eduardo Baldaci de Lima, one of the only four astronomers recognized by the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), has described how God used his training in Haggai Institute to influence his life and ministry. Astronomer Eduardo Baldaci de Lima According to him, he left Haggai Institute with a broader understanding of the hope to which he had been called. “God wants to use me in totality for the extension of His Kingdom; not just my spiritual dimension but also my abilities and capabilities with which He Himself has gifted me,” he said. “God has placed His... Is Technology Spoiling the Simple Art of Star Gazing?

Today there is an IT gadget for just about every aspect of observing the heavens. Go To technology is no longer an added luxury but a standard part of most proper telescopes. The modern attitude seems to be - ‘Why go through the tedious process of aligning your scope when in two or three easy steps, a computer will do it for you?' And star-hopping your way to a target is practically frowned upon – punch in the name on your hand held device and hey presto you are there. Digital cameras, web cams, image stackers, image manipulation software,– We... Read More...

Night of the Shooting Stars

Let me tell you a bit about the Nuit des Etoiles Filantes (Night of the Shooting Stars) and , no, it is not an Italian movie, it's a real 20 year old astronomy event!!! http://www.afanet.fr/nuits/pdf/NDE_2010_DP.pdf I can't find anything in English, so I'm going to describe it as much as I can. The public TV channel Antenne 2 (now called France2) in august 1990 (the Friday night nearest the Perseid maximum) , organized a live public event, outside, in an arena south of France, a 4 hour long astronomy night, together with well known astronomers and youth science associations. Nights of the shooting stars ! Nuits des Etoiles Filantes

This year is the 20th year of the Nights of the Shooting Stars, started in France as "Nuits des étoiles filantes" back in 1990, with a live TV show at Antenne2 for 13 years around the time of the Perseids shower ! On Friday 6th, I went to help friends at MIRA (popular observatory, north of Brussels) entertain the public and show the heavens from the roof of their premises. We had about 2 hours of good sky after darkness fell to explain telescopes, show stars, Jupiter (the planetary trio was hidden by clouds, so no joy there). Philippe from... Read More...

Global Astronomy Month 2010 - Maunakea, Hawai'i

For the month of April 2010 (GAM) I and my colleague Kala Babayan initiated a collaboration between Astronomers without Borders, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i and The Onizuka Visitor's Center on Maunakea, to bring traditional Hawaiian celestial navigation and wayfinding to the sacred mountain of Maunakea on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Maunakea, White Mountain, Mountain of Wakea The Sky Father. This mountain is of deep cultural significance to the people of the Hawiian islands. Report: 3rd Seasons without Borders

The 3rd "Seasons without Borders" (SwB) concluded successfully last June 2010 celebrating the beginning of winter/summer seasons in the southern and northern hemispheres. In typical AWB tradition, groups from Brazil, Canada, Iraq, Iran, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Portugal, Uruguay and USA gathered and celebrated the solstice under the theme "Two seasons, One earth, One people". Amateur Astronomers Association of Kurdistan/Iraq (AAAK) celebrated the Solstice at Minara Park in Erbil City, Iraq, where they also hosted the World Music Day Festival. The park was full of foreigners listening to music and looking through the eyepiece of telescopes. It was reported that... Read More...

Two Star Parties in Canada to celebrate SwB3

We actually ended up doing two “Seasons Without Borders” Star Parties to represent Canada; one on Sunday June 20th and the other on Tuesday June 22nd. The first took place at Humber Bay Park, a spit of land sticking out into Lake Ontario, overlooking the downtown core of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. About 35 people attended (from the “Single Horizons” club) and skies cleared just in time for some spectacular viewing. We run a desk top computer & 22” LCD screen to present our initial, basic “Astronomy 101” talk on the universe (beginning with the AWB's tremendous, Hi-Def Video), then turn... Read More...
