Another Sidewalk Session....

What is the purpose of building astronomy awareness ? To whom we should build this awareness. We always said it's for everyone and we also hoped they could enjoy astronomy and the night sky. But do we really share astronomy to all people? I usually did my events with students in a public schools or private schools, or share astronomy with orphan or in a village. But almost 2 weeks ago (July14th), when I took my telescope outside and try to capture the night sky with my camera, I met a servant from house nearby. I observed in the street... Read More...

Improvized Sidewalk Astronomy in Antwerp, Belgium

On july 15th, as the sky was great (but of course, next day is a work day), I took the bike, went to the port carrying a Manfrotto tripod and the 90mm Apex Orion telescope, assembled the whole thing on a bridge (above hangars) along the river Scheld and sure enough, several groups of people came along and I proposed they had a look at the crescent Moon, Venus and Saturn....They seemed delighted! Opportunity Watch 1

One of the best instruments we ever have to enjoy the Universe are our own eyes. As the guys from "The World at Night" say: "If you can see it, then you can photograph it"! And you know what? It is true! How many time have you seen something in the skies worth to capture in a snapshot? Since some years ago I always carry a digital camera with me virtually all the time, so I reduce to a minimum the chance of losing the capture a nice event with it. Lastnight, while I was at home, I had the... Read More...

A Story of a Sun Before Sunset

Today... when I went back home, the sky was cloudy but I could see the sun behind trees. So I try to catch it with my camera. While I set up my camera on a tripod, my neighbors came around and started to ask me what am I doing? I was quiet surprise since in the neighborhood I live in, people barely know each other or have close relation ship. Something I don't really like from living in a big city. But well.. this was a start. So we talked about sun and then solar system. They were surprised with... Read More...

On June 21 st I set up my telescope in front of my house right on the street and invited all my neighbors to come celebrate the summer solstice by looking at the moon, Venus, and Saturn in my telescope.  Because it gets dark so late, I spent some time explaining how my telescope works, showing them how much sky they would be looking at, and letting them look through a card that shows field of view.  Then I showed them the telrad and explained how I find things in it.  I... Clear skies at last

On April 30th 2010 was my rescheduled date for the Global Star Party. It started out cloudy when people started arriving so we discussed AWB and general Astronomy. Then one at a time Venus came into view along with the rest of the night sky. We viewed Venus then Mars and M44 the Beehive Cluster, at that time the ISS flew over head and many questions were asked. We finally went on to Saturn, I started off with a low power lens so it could stay into view longer and let everyone look. Then I changed the 20mm lens out... Read More...
