Sky of Whakatane Observatory

About Us

We are a non-profit making community facility. Promoting education and enjoyment in astronomy for everyone. We own 3 telescopes in 2 observatories, a 14inch Celestron SCT, 10inch Meade SCT and a locally handbuilt 6inch refractor. We have two dedicated public nights each week throughout the year, but are happy to open up at anytime for group. During the winter many school classes visit us, so they do not have to wait up too long before it gets dark. During the summer we receive alot of overseas visitors, who are thrilled to see the Southern skies for the first time. Currently being completed is a new audio/visual classroom, for presentations to large groups, or for when the weather doesn’t want to co-operate to open the observatories. We are halfway to getting the funding to complete the classroom, which we are hoping will be ready early 2009, for the IYA2009.
