One of the most recognizable constellations in the night sky
Orion, The Hunter, is one of the most recognizable constellations in the night sky and is easily located by his belt of three bright stars Alnitak (Zeta Orionis), Alnilam (Epsilon Orionis) and Mintaka (Delta Orionis) – one of the most prominent asterisms in the night sky. Orion’s shoulder is marked by the red supergiant Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis), and his left leg is marked by the blue-white supergiant Rigel (Beta Orionis). Star Party for 5th and 6th grade students
On April 5th we hosted a a star party for our local grade school to kick off our Global Astronomy Month events. The program included an indoor presentation by our club president which covered a brief history of astronomy, how the sky looked tonight, the types of telescopes the students would be looking through and what deep sky objects they may see in with those telescopes. The program also talked about light pollution and the effect it has on society and the night sky. Astronomy Day is April 24th.
90mm will be hosting our first sidewalk star party where the public can stop and view Saturn, Mars and other deep sky objects through our 150mm refractor. We're just going to setup the telescope on the corner of the intersection near our location and talk to the public as they pass by during the evening. Why do this in town where light pollution is, well, outrageous? That's just the point, to bring attention to the problem of light pollution and teach everyone about effective lighting for the community. Read More...
