people_telescopes_universe

Everyone is invited and encouraged to submit their contributions to this special GAM astropoetry project organized by the Romanian Society for Meteors and Astronomy (SARM).

This international astropoetry project is based on the theme of visiting the largest international concentration of telescopes in the northern hemisphere – and home to the largest optical and gamma-ray telescopes in the world – at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) at La Palma on the Canary Islands archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean.  Contributions combine cultural, educational, literaryand astronomical aspects through both verse and images.

But this world-famous observatory is not the only one that stands out from the crowd.  Submissions may include trips to Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, USA (a very large and diverse collection of astronomical instruments), Mauna Kea Observatories in Hawaii (perhaps the largest concentration of large telescopes on any one mountain), the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona (the largest aperture of any fully-steerable optical telescope), or the largest regional concentration of large telescopes in the Chilean Andes.  Where else have you visited, or dreamed of visiting, a great collection of telescopes in one area?

This project began with a trip to ORM at Las Palmas by SARM. Now additional international submissions are sought on the relationship between this and other great observatories, how they relate to all inhabitants of Earth, and how they connect us to

the Universe.  SARM describes its work as an “astro-humanist” description of the most astronomical island in the world.

The aim of this project is to recognize and praise the founders of this and other exceptional “realms of telescopes”, to provide a new way to express astronomical knowledge, and to give rise in every sky lover the idea of making a similar pilgrimage to these great concentrations of telescopes anywhere on our planet.

The deadline for submissions is April 15.
The astropoetry collection will be published on April 30.
