The last week of the 2017 Global Astronomy Month celebration
One of the strengths of the local astronomy community of the Philippines is in doing astronomy outreach activities. To celebrate the Global Astronomy Month astronomy organizations from the Philippines have organized telescope viewing events throughout the month of April.
For the last week of April we start with the SunDay event. We have the Astronomical League of the Philippines setting up at the Mall of Asia to give the public a chance to view the Sun in H-alpha and white light.
The Manila Street Astronomers continues its series of free telescope viewing events with Abdur Rahman Alindao. For April 24 the MSA sets up at McDonald’s Antlers. For April 25 MSA sets up at Centrall Mall Salitran. For April 26 MSA sets up at McDonald’s, Moriones, Tondo, and at Kalentong, Mandaluyong City with Christopher Lu of MSA and ALP.
For April 29 we have a ftv at Max’s Las Piñas Branch with the adviser of the Bedan Society for Young Astronomers – Jun Cajigal. And simultaneously we have a Messier Marathon at Caliraya with the ALP, and the Messier Marathon and Star Party of the Manila Street Astronomers and the Philippine Union of Student Organizations for Astronomy.
For the last day of April MSA sets up at Moriones plaza, Tondo to close the month’s series of free telescope viewing events. Abdur was able to do a series of 19 sidewalk astronomy set ups under the banner of the Manila Street Astronomers.
April has ended but the fire and passion to share the beauty of the night sky to all continues among the members of the local astronomy community. It has been a good GAM and we look forward to next year’s Global Astronomy Month.
