Fayetteville Public Library Offers Donated Telescope

A telescope was recently donated to the Fayetteville Public Library, Fayetteville, AR, and is now available for checkout.

The telescope was donated to the library by Supporting STEM and Space, Inc. and is sponsored by Sugar Creek Astronomical Society.

Library officials said the make and model of the telescope was specifically selected for ease of use and durability. In addition, the library has created a fast facts sheet and staff members have received training to assist patrons in using the telescope.

The telescope is available for checkout by any authorized library patron over the age of 18. Patrons can check out the telescope for two-week intervals.

“Our library is all about discovery,” said David Johnson, the library’s executive director . “We are excited to share this telescope with our patrons in order to increase access to the night sky and foster scientific literacy.”

Supporting STEM and Space, Inc. is a local non-profit promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education in Northwest Arkansas, AR. The group’s long-term goal is to establish a state-of-the-art science education facility, according to a news release.

Sugar Creek Astronomical Society is a service-focused amateur astronomy club that aims to promote public awareness of astronomy by hosting public star parties and lectures throughout the year. The club will provide the library with ongoing support and education along with maintenance of the telescope.
