GLOBAL ASTRONOMY MONTH – LIGHT POLLUTION AWARENESS REPORT

Global Astronomy Month (GAM), organized in April every year by Astronomers Without Borders, is the world's largest global celebration of astronomy. For this year, SPACE has suggested several GAM events for conduction by SPACE associated schools.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Total number of participants 500.
  • To introduce the concept of light pollution – A global threat in the environment.
  • Science behind the light pollution and its awareness is discussed in online video.
  • This program motivated the participants to make use of this international opportunity provided by SPACE for understanding the light pollution awareness.
  • Participants were trained well and the concepts were made clear for performing the light pollution magnitude of their city sky observation from their home.
  • Participants observed this event personally in their residence by counting the number of Stars in Leo and Orion Constellation and filled a google form for the case study of light pollution affected their city sky.

DESCRIPTION:

Participants understood about light pollution and how it affect birds, visibility of the night sky, animals and human health through various social media video interaction participants understood the science behind it and observed this rare celestial event and shared their experience and google form response data report with us.

CONCLUSION:

                       The participants observed the number of stars in Leo or Orion constellation to find the magnitude of light pollution in their sky and submitted us the online observation report.
