CYPRUS Celebrates World Space Week - Biggest Space Event on Earth - October 4-10
LARNACA – 03 OCTOBER, 2020
The annual celebration of World Space Week is planned for October 4-10, 2020 in CYPRUS with the theme “Satellites Improve Life”. Activities such as revealing news and informing the public about satellites and their broad benefits for humankind by the KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY capture the spirit of this theme.
“Every year from October 4 to 10, people all over the world gather to celebrate the accomplishments of humankind in space exploration and inspire our youth,” says World Space Week National Coordinator for CYPRUS, GEORGE TROULLIAS.
“World Space Week was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. Since then, it has grown to be the largest space celebration on Earth. Last year the celebration included 8,057 events in 96 countries.
These dates commemorate two events:
October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration
October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.
WSW activities include:
● School activities and workshops
● Astronomy parties
● Telescope observations
● Online public lectures on space missions and international cooperation
A complete list of planned activities can be found on http://www.worldspaceweek.org/nations/CYPRUS PRESS RELEASE
“Anyone can join the celebration by planning a space-related event during October 4-10 and register it at www.worldspaceweek.org,” said GEORGE TROULLIAS. “It can be a university lecture, stargazing night, or watching a space movie with friends. Even something as small as a presentation on space to a classroom could inspire a young child to excel in school,” he said.
