Mircea the Elder ruled the Romanian Land of Wallachia in between 1386 and 1418.
His resistance against the Ottoman expansion to Europe marked his country’s destiny for a few centuries: Wallachia did not become a pashalik, but only a tributary state.
He also recovered Dobruja in for a while, so that after the definitive return of this province to its mother country in 1878, the municipality of Tulcea erected a statue for his memory right in the centre of the town.
