BARASCHI’S CARYATIDS
(Bucharest’s Herastrau Park, July 25, 2020)
Astro-photo-poem (cosmopoem) by Andrei Dorian Gheorghe
Constantin Baraschi made
the Alley of the Caryatids in 1939.
The monument was destroyed
by the dictatorial regime in the 1950s
and remade identically
by Ionel Stoicescu after 1990.
Baraschi’s “Caryatids” are
Romanian country girls,
who individually carry jugs of water
on their heads.
They also collectively carry a long line
that seems to be the horizon line.
Their “star” is Modura,
a country girl who brought water
for King Carol II of Romania
after an airplane crash in the 1930s,
saving his life.
But the last time I saw her
was when Modura carried
even the Sun on her head!
Then I understood:
Baraschi’s Caryatids carry
not only the horizon line,
but also the entire solar system!
