BARASCHI’S CARYATIDS
(Bucharest’s Herastrau Park, July 25, 2020)

Constantin Baraschi made
the Alley of the Caryatids in 1939.
The monument was destroyed
by the dictatorial regime in the 1950s
and remade identically
by Ionel Stoicescu after 1990.

Baraschi’s “Caryatids” are
Romanian country girls,
who individually carry jugs of water
on their heads.
They also collectively carry a long line
that seems to be the horizon line.
