I was on may way to an aerospace engineer from China who operates a machine with which we can look inside of things. On the train I read an article about the linguistic characteristics of a tribe of amazon natives. It said their language lacks the use of past and future. It can only refer to the present. Every now and then I would peek through the window, scanning the Dutch countryside; A two dimensional land, which had been rolled out like a magic carpet over water a few decades ago. Its typical pattern now covered by the first snow of the year.In the middle of the article a drawing was printed, which had funny similarities with my current situation.
A drawing of a man looking out of a window at the snow outside. It seemed as though he was thinking of something. Snowflakes were drawn with thick black lines around them. It made me think of how printed letters similarly circumscribe, or rather encapsulate, spaces of meaning. I felt lucky because through my window there was much more to see. In the barren fields were bushes and small shrubs that had been cut down with utmost precision. I figured there must be some kind of statistics behind the number of bushes that had been allowed to grow per square meter. I saw immense herds of deer and ancient cows that had been introduced here recently, with much appetite and satisfaction munching away the traces of our civilization.
