Astronomers Without Borders announces the departure of Mike Simmons as Executive Director (President). As founder of AWB, he has played a critical role in the development, growth and success of the organization from its inception.

“The board thanks Mike for his many years of dedicated leadership in building the organization, and wishes him well in his next endeavor,” said AWB Chairman of the Board of Directors, Tim Spuck, in a statement.

“Founding AWB and watching it grow over the years has been a thrill. From the beginning, AWB has been guided by what the worldwide astronomy community wanted. It’s been an honor to build an organization and engage astronomy enthusiasts everywhere. It’s now time for new initiatives, both for me and for AWB. I am confident that AWB will continue to grow and cross new boundaries” commented Simmons.

To guide the organization through its transition, AWB’s board of directors has named Zoe A. Chee as Interim Executive Director, effective immediately. Chee previously served as AWB’s Program Director, overseeing the company’s daily operations and solar eclipse glasses global outreach program.

According to Spuck, the next step for AWB will be an intensive strategic visioning and planning effort involving key stakeholders across the organization. Members of the Board of Directors and the AWB Advisory Board, staff, and AWB representatives across the globe will take part in building the future for AWB.

The AWB Board and staff can not thank Mike enough for the unwavering commitment, passion, enthusiasm and motivation he has shown Astronomers Without Borders over the past decade. He will be greatly missed by the staff, Board, members and partners alike. We look forward to following the success of his career and are hopeful and excited for the next chapter of AWB, as we continue to support our global community and strive to reach our vision of One People, One Sky.
