Report

Everybody knows about the drastic changes that took place in Tunisia during the last months of this year and especially at the political and security level. However, with the strong will of amateur astronomers, members of Astronomy and Space Club Sidi Bourouis worked hard on organizing a scientific activity that is worth being part of activities related to “International Astronomy Month”. April 2, 2011 Amateur astronomers organized a conference that dealt with problems of light pollution, nocturne vision, and the accompanying nocturne animals such as insects, bats, and owls. The conference introduced by Mr. Girard Sirven, member of National Association of the Protection of Nocturne Sky (France), was followed by a discussion between the guest and the children who attended the conference. At night, under the protective supervision of military forces, the club organized a sky observation at the local Garden of Family and Children. Most of the children and adults who attended the activity agreed that the magnificent sight at that night was that of Saturn. Orion also, with its beautiful colors and which was a little bit down in the horizon, captured the attention of the visitors who were watching with a lot of admiration and discovery. There two criteria to organize a successful night sky observation: either total obscurity with average number of participants or a place near the street lamps but with many of participants. April, 9, 2011 The organizers managed to find a place that is not far from the children and families and at the same time with the minimum of light to avoid light pollution. The only problem that the club members regretted its absence was live internet broadcasting. What attracted the attention of the organizers was that the visitors were reluctant to contributing in the activities but as soon as they see the craters of the moon through the telescopes they change their attitudes and become insistently motivated to see again and again and to ask “what” and “how” questions. April, 15, 2011 The lunar week: an activity that was held at the secondary school in collaboration with the local scouts. The program was film projection and discussion of themes and question that the students concern about celestial phenomena. The program also included a night observation of the sky at the football terrain. April, 17, 2011 Unfortunately, Sunday’s program didn’t succeed because of the clouds covering the sky all night. April, 30, 2011 The main event was the reward of participants. The public of our small village was unique especially students; even at moments of insecurity they didn’t want to fail to participate in the only scientific and cultural activity in the premises. Children who were brilliant in discussions were offered some presents in spite of our very limited budget.
