(Grades 7–12)

First Place:

COSMOPOETS
By Elizabeth Gutierrez, Ingleside, Illinois, USA

I am the Cosmos
The poem is about myself
Its poet is me.

The Cosmos is you
A poem about you all
You are the poet.

Cosmos within us
The poem we seek to write
The poets are we.

Second Place:

OH STAR, YOU THAT PLAY WITH THE MOON
By Francisco Josã, Vila Real, Portugal

Oh star, you that play with the moon
I wish I were in your place
I wish I had your luck
With the moon could play
The moon could kiss
The entire world could watch

Oh star in heaven
Walking through the silent night
Come to meet me!
Take me to see the cosmos
Me and you in a wonderful adventure

Third Place:

PLUTO
by Rachel Pribble, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, USA

Pluto
Forgotten Planet
Isolated, neglected, frigid
Small but worthy rock
Planetoid

Honorable Mention:

THE SUN, THE EARTH, THE MOON, AND THE STARS
By Sajal Aggarwal, New Delhi, India

Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars
Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are not far behind
They form the solar system when combined

The red, yellow, blue, hot and cold stars
The unending galaxies know no bars
Is it science or almighty art?
Asteroids, comets, and meteors play their part

Wonderful, amazing constellations the stars make
Bear or hunter—what shapes they take!
The pole star points in the north, they say
And shows sailors and travelers their way

A star is a cloud of dust and gas
Which gives it the brightness it has
The sun supports all life on earth
While it itself burns like a hearth

Man has traveled to Mars and the Moon
As he tends to inhabit them soon
Air and water is all we need
This is what makes life on earth breed

Neil Armstrong first laid on the Moon his foot
Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian to follow suit
Kalpana Chawla lost her life in space
Sunita Williams roamed the universe for several days

There's so much beyond the clear blue sky
I eagerly wish to see and pry
But human life’s too short for it
One has to spend it all to see a bit

Honorable Mention:

THE MOON
By Wendy Lie, Tangerang, Indonesia

Solitude satellite
Comes at night, when daylight goes
Quietly guiding the stars to glow
Whispering softly as the wind blows

Honorable Mention:

MY UNIVERSE
By Griselda, Tangerang, Indonesia

Your eyes twinkle like the bright stars
Your lips form a different kind of moon
Those precious rings on your ears
Made it look like Saturn & Jupiter
Every inch of your hair is the dark sky
And you
Are my universe
