Body embraced by an old lawn chair,
bare feet nestled in cold, dewy grass,
drowsy eyes focus on
an ancient patch of sky
where Perseus attempts to liberate Andromeda,
and a sad Cassiopeia, Queen of the Sky…
slowly reels forward in her chair.
Overhead Venus shines effervescent,
like some cosmic spotlight
on an ethereal stage.
Where I the sole audience,
sit and wait
in early morning darkness.
Silence reigns
among darkened homes
where those alseep are
missing the big show.
The gift arrives
like some great firefly
in the midsummer night air,
a stroke of blazing white light
dazzles my eyes
then vanishes
into the hazy, urban sky.
Feeling mesmerized,
wanting more,
this elusive beauty tempts me
to stay a little longer,
seducing me slowly,
to wait upon the Perseids
in the wee hours of the morn.
I breathe in,
exhale
and smile
as I sit among the stars,
and wait...
in quiet reverie.
