Stephane Vetter of France and Andreas Max Böckle of Austria are the first-prize winners in the fourth annual International Earth and Sky Photo Contest organized by The World at Night (TWAN) in collaboration with the Education and Public Outreach group at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and Global Astronomy Month, a project of Astronomers Without Borders.
Eligible photo entries had to be created since the beginning of 2012 and in the “TWAN style”— showing both the Earth and the sky by combining elements of the night sky with the backdrop of a beautiful, historic, or notable location or landmark.
The contest is growing wildly in popularity, with photographers from 45 countries submitting nearly 700 eligible entries, double the number received last year.
Vetter won the award in the “Beauty Of The Night Sky” category for his photo “Sky Above Godafoss” of aurora and the Milky Way over the Waterfall of the Gods in Iceland. Böckle took first prize in the “Against The Lights” category for his photo “Under the Hood” taken from a mountaintop overlooking the city of Salzburg on a moonlit night.
