March 25 - April 30
Enter the 8th International Earth and Sky Photo Contest on Dark Skies Importance. There will be up to 10 winners over two categories with the top prize usually a telescope. This is the 8th year the contest has run internationally and we are expecting it to be bigger than ever!
Coordinated by The World At Night (TWAN), in conjunction with GAM 2017 and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the contest is open and free to anyone of any age, anywhere around the world. Submissions accepted through April. The winners will be announced in May.
The contest was founded by TWAN and Dark Skies Awareness project in 2008 as a regional program. It was expanded to an international effort in 2009 and it continues to grow globally each year.
In previous years the contest and the winning photos were widely broadcast by major science news media world-wide such as National Geographic, Sky and Telescope, Huffington Post, Space.com, NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day,The Universe Today , and many more!
Submitted photographs must be created in the "TWAN style" -- showing both the Earth and the sky -- by combining elements of the night sky (e.g. stars, planets, the Moon, or celestial events) in the backdrop of a beautiful, historic, or notable location or landmark. The contest theme, "Dark Skies Importance," has two categories: "Beauty of the Night Sky" and "Against the Lights." One is to impress people on how important and amazing the starry sky is and the other is to raise awareness on how bad the problem of light pollution has become.
