This Sun Day april 1st was no April Fool's day for us! The club d'astronomie d'Ottignies Louvain-La-Neuve got the permission from the police to display telescopes on the Main City Hall at Louvain-La-Neuve. It's mainly a University Town with no car circulation (cars are parked underground, luckily not too far from our observation place, outside.
We had about 4 or 5 different telescopes, all aimed at the Sun and all with different kinds of filters.
At 11 AM, we started the day with almost immediately people wondering what it was about. All day long, we benefitted from a sunny generous weather, All ages came and were curious and looked through our instruments with wooows, aaahhs….We talked a lot, had very little time to rest. I rushed to a fast-food restaurant to eat something and didn't waste too much time there. The town is no more exclusively inhabited by students. We saw several spots on the sun as well as protuberances, filaments. We also regularly ajusted the tripod. Later in the afternoon, I proposed to aim our scopes to the Moon for the Moon week (I returned back to the car to get the 90 mm Maksutov and stored the PST. My friends had better scopes and the crowd got a treat from them.
I'll be forever thankfull to Ashraf, Linda, Daniel, Christophe, Michel, Thierry, Alain who displayed their telescopes too and who mentionned the GAM events from the AWB. Certainly the most successful AWB event so far !
