The astronomy section of the division of Earth Space and Environment at the University of Glamorgan in South Wales is involved in a number of projects and programmes specific to the areas of astronomy, science communication and public engagement. In association with the Science Communication Research Unit, the astronomy dept both edits and contributes to the online European edition of NASA’a Astrobiology magazine, runs a BSc (Hons) entitled Astronomy and Space and provides pathways to MSc and PhD programmes both internal and external to the university. Undergraduate student research topics within the field range from dissertation topics as diverse as Dark Energy and Dark Matter, Near Earth Asteroid Tracking, Variable Stars, Astrobiology, Archaoastronomy, Catastrophism, Supernova Search, the origin and evolution of Galaxies and Observational Programmes utilising the university’s telescopes. Staff at the astronomy unit play a major international part in the development of programmes dealing with the communication of astronomy, astrobiology, physics and cosmology; the history and communication of science through film, fiction and the imagination and the public engagement with science through the development of innovative outreach initiatives. Over the last 5 years over 600 students have engaged in one of the worlds largest Astrobiology outreach programme, a project that has been internationally recognized and reported on for its innovation and accessibility.
