Western Colorado Astronomy Club

About Us

The Western Colorado Astronomy Club was founded in 1989 by a small group of local amateur astronomers. Our mission is to foster interest and promote education in astronomy in the Grand Valley of Mesa County, Colorado. Club membership does not require a telescope or other optical equipment, just an interest in the majesty of the night sky. Membership benefits include access to members-only content on the website (newsletter blog, discussion forum, etc.), and The Reflector, a quarterly national newsletter published by the Astronomical League. We also offer expert advice on telescope use and purchases, lectures on astronomy and cosmology, and loans of club-owned telescopes. As part of the larger community, we encourage preservation of the night sky as a natural resource for all to study, photograph, and enjoy.

Meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the first Tuesday of every month at Colorado Mesa University in the Wubben Hall Science Building. Additional public outreach observing events are held at the Colorado National Monument, Highline Lake State Park, Rifle Gap State Park, and other dark-sky locations. Club members visit schools and state parks at various times to give telescope viewing time to the students, and to lecture on astronomy-related science and current events.
