The celebration of GAM2012 in Nicaragua blasted off in Nicaragua with the Sun Day, on April 1st. in the small town of Catarina, Masaya. With a couple of properly filtered telescope, educational posters, mylar hand-hel filters and a solar kitchen, ANASA and FUPROSOMUNIC (a.k.a. Women of the Sun), shared their love for the Sun with the people of Catarina. For a couple of hours, more than 80 local residents learned about the Main Star in the Solar System and how to take advantage of its light and heat. GAM 2012 SunDay april 1 and Moonweek

This Sun Day april 1st was no April Fool's day for us! The club d'astronomie d'Ottignies Louvain-La-Neuve got the permission from the police to display telescopes on the Main City Hall at Louvain-La-Neuve. It's mainly a University Town with no car circulation (cars are parked underground, luckily not too far from our observation place, outside. We had about 4 or 5 different telescopes, all aimed at the Sun and all with different kinds of filters. At 11 AM, we started the day with almost immediately people wondering what it was about. All day long, we benefitted from a sunny generous... Read More...

Space Expo visit (february 7 2012 at Noordwijk, the Netherlands)

During the very cold weeks we have known in Europe, a visit to Space Expo at Noordwijk, the Netherlands, was organized thanks to my good friends Linda and Ashraf who go to schools to teach astronomy. This was a project by a school (10-12 year old pupils) at Seneffe in the Hainaut province. The children were at times restless but it was a great day and we saw moonrocks, a HST solar panel that was brought back (there were 22 children and 5 adults). http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_edit?ns=1&video_id=xwqqzcKdQ9E https://picasaweb.google.com/108584325990837650927/2012NoordwijkSeneffe Raoul Read More...

The Night of Darkness in Belgium october 15 2011

The Night of Darkness in 2011 october 15 https://picasaweb.google.com/108584325990837650927/2011NO Last year in october, Belgium organized the Night of Darkness al over the country and we were lucky because the weather was finally cooperating ! The Astrovega club was split between Brussels and Gembloux and in both places, there were lots of visitors ! Even though we were divided, it worked because we organized it early enough in time. It was very damp, however, and soon we had to take measures to correct this, if we could. Nevertheless, it was a success all over the country. In Brussels alone, 700 persons... Read More...

The Teaching Continues: Space Clubs and more . . .

In mid January I was able to send resources to the 5 secondary schools to help them establish "Space Clubs" on campus. At that time I wrote to folks saying; "When I was with you in October, some of the teachers and Headmasters expressed a desire to start a “ Space Club ” at their school. I hope that each of the schools will be able to establish a club to make full use of the equipment and resources I shared with you. A Space Club will give interested students a chance to learn more about science, math, geography, and... Read More...

Seasons Across Borders

I had a chance to experience the differences in the seasons directly, having just returned from a meeting at the International Astronomical Union's new Office of Astronomy for Development in Cape Town, South Africa.  Leaving my home in southern California at 34 degrees north latitude, I found myself at close to 34 degrees south.  So as well as the 10-hour time change, I also went from the summer solstice to the winter solstice longest day of the year to the shortest.  And by coincidence, Cape Town has the same type of climate - Mediterranean - which exists in...
