Observing Jupiter From Libya

This period of the year is considered to be extraordinary to observe planet Jupiter and its marvellous moons. It will be quite possible to spot and track Jupiter at the dome of the night sky, where the planet will be visually clear to observers from east at the night's first hours and to be seen from west at dawn. This photo was captured last night in Tripoli-Libya by Heba Ahmed, a member of Roaya Astro. It is to be noted that planet Jupiter will be in its closest point to Earth by next Tuesday with a distance of about 663537... Read More...

Gerhani Matahari total : Preparations for the 9 March Total Solar Eclipse in Indonesia

A total solar eclipse is one of the most memorable and spectacular natural events you can ever experience. In one week's time on Wednesday morning, 9 March 2016 parts of Indonesia and Malaysia will have the opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse, in Indonesian this is called Gerhani Matahari total . There is a high probability of cloud, nonetheless many astronomy enthusiasts, such as myself, will travel to remote parts of the planet to have a chance of experiencing this fairly unique experience. I will be in Indonesia for the eclipse travelling with a small group led by Avivah... Read More...

M42 - Orion Nebula and Trapezium Cluster

I share my work of M42 - Orion Nebula and The Trapezium Cluster which illuminates the whole complex of hydrogen clouds. This work is a compilation photos from 2013 to 2016 from Caguas, Puerto Rico. The evolution of astrophotography I practice and as far as I may get my equipment in my constant search of astronomical knowledge. I invite you to view this videoblog (In Spanish Only) of the study of this capture of M42 - Orion Nebula and The Trapezium. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He83s1m5KZ4 Read More...

C/2013 US Comet Catalina & M101 - Pinwheel Galaxy

From the Oort cloud on a path taken millions of years ago, today it can be displayed at its closest point to Earth the comet C / 2013 US10, also known as "Catherine". Among the Big Dipper and Polaris (North Star), at a distance of 110 million kilometers from Earth, Catherine comes from a region on the outskirts of the solar system called the Oort cloud, which is an area where it was the "rubble" (hundreds of millions of these objects) of the formation of the solar system; their interaction with one of those stars his career might have originated.... Sirius Rising Above Grossmugl Star Walk

For the remaining weeks of winter Sirius dominates the evening sky. Being the brightest of all stars in our night sky, it rises around nightfall this time of the year. The image, shot on January 22, 2016, shows Sirius rising above the Leeberg tumulus, a 2500 years old ancient burial mound at the endpoint of the Grossmugl Star Walk. The Grossmugl Star Walk is located in Austria, Europe, only half an hour's drive from Vienna. The star walk installation is a self-guided 1.5km long astronomical edutainment trail aimed at the general public. Its goal is to raise awareness for the... Read More...

Big Skies: 60,000 years of astronomies on the inland plains of New South Wales, Australia

by Merill

I'd like to introduce a new Australian creative collaboration between arts practitioners, astronomers and local communities to share and explore stories about people's relationships with the cosmos, as experienced from Wiradjuri Country , in central western New South Wales. This project specifically explores the work of cultural, optical and radio astronomers in the region. You can visit our new blog at Bigskiescollaboration.wordpress.com. The first post is an essay about efforts by cultural astronomers to investivate the stellar alignments of a small mountain, Mount Mulguthrie, which, they suspect, was once a Wiradjuri astronomical site. This essay specifically addresses the loss of... Read More...

For all enthusiast of astronomy / astrophotography people around the world. I share my capture for the conjunction of planets Saturn and Venus from Caguas, Puerto Rico 1/9/2016 - 5:20am. I used the astronomical equipment Meade LX90, Antares Reducer F/6.3 with the NexImage 5 Planetary Camera. Both planets fits in focal field of the planetary camera. I controlled the gain and exposure manually for not overexposure of planets. Read More...

Hidden Hydrogen Marvel Sh2-27

Near the head of the constellation Scorpius glows an immense red gas bubble like a celestial ghost. It has a diameter of 10 degrees, which corresponds to the size of a fist held at arm's length. The innocuous name of this vast expanse of hydrogen gas is Sharpless 2-27. In spite of its enormous size it is invisible to human eyes and even astrophotography almost always fails to capture it. Only a handful of photographs exist of this large but elusive object, because the nebula is way too large for any telescope and it has an extremely low surface brightness.... Read More...

Some astonishing details on Aldebaran's occultation by the moon.

On December 23rd 2015 an interesting detail was captured here at our local public observatory (Kepler Sternwarte Linz/Austria). Herbert Raab (chief of our local association) used an DSLR and our 130mm APO to make a video of the occultation. Due to the fact the RedGiant Aldebaran has an angular diameter of 0,02" (arcseconds) - which is equal observing a human hair at the distance of 500 meter !!! - the star did not suddenly disappear. The Moon's speed was about 0,55" per second which is equal ~0,01" between single videoframes - so we could capture the "fading-out" of the star.... Read More...

Position Angle Scales for Telescopes

Got a telescope for Christmas? Here's a gadget you can easily make yourself that greatly improves the usefulness of your new instrument: A position angle scale that shows you the celestial directions in your eyepiece. When viewing the heavens through the eyepiece of a telescope, one can get lost easily. Where the heck is southeast in the field of view? Does Jupiter rotate from left to right or from right to left? Which way does the tail of that comet point? And where can the elusive companion of this double star be expected? These are some of the questions that... Read More...

Untracked DSLR Astrophotography

For astrophotography with a DSLR it is common practice to set the camera on top of an equatorial mount or other tracking device. This way, Earth's rotation gets compensated and long exposures of star fields and the Milky Way become possible. After a series of experiments we are now able to present a simple method for DSLR astrophotography where an equatorial mount or a sky tracker is no longer necessary to capture stunning pictures of the Milky Way or bright deep-sky objects. All that is needed is one of the newer DSLR models that allows high ISO settings, a tripod... Read More...

The "space bulls" 2015 - Taurids

Every year the Earth passes through the meteor stream called Complex of Taurids in two periods: Jun / Jul and October / November. In the first period produces meteors coming from the Earth's dayside, so less vigorous. However, the second period produces particularly interesting meteors to the observer, particularly those aware of bolides view (fireballs). The Taurids swarm is a dynamic system composed of a multitude of fragments, ranging from micro dimensions of the kilometrics, orbiting the Sun two well-known rains are linked to such site:. Southern and Northen Taurids. The parental body associated with the production of debris in... Read More...

Bolide in Rio de Janeiro

At 01: 59h local time a large meteor crossed the ocean toward the state of Rio de Janeiro and its glare in the sky was realized in several states of the southeast region of the country. The preliminary data indicate an intense glow, much larger than the full moon and a higher trajectory 150km over the skies of the southeast coast of the country. The meteor lasted about 5 seconds to disintegrate on the Earth's atmosphere and several reports are being sent to the Exoss. Three stations Exoss Citizen Science registered the bolide. See more in exoss.org Read More...
