The opposition of Mars means when the red planet and the sun are on opposite sides of the sky. Mars looks in the east at sunset, amounting almost to be above our heads at midnight, and glows a bright orange color that is almost 10 times brighter than a star of the first magnitude. This event occurs every 26 months (Science @ NASA). The event began on Sunday May 22, 2016 in Caguas, Puerto Rico. I began to prepare to capture this astronomical event. The weather did not help much as they had many clouds and windy. I am preparing... Read More...
On May 21, in collaboration with the History Museum in Ramnicu Valcea, Romania, we attended the Night of Museums. People have witnessed multimedia presentations on astronomical topics, then they made observations by telescope. Read More...
Read More...

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences celebrated the Global Astronomy Month 2016 with a theme of “Capture the exquisiteness of the night sky” last April 14, 2016 held at Aguho Elementary School, Barangay Sampaloc, Tanay, Rizal. In lined with this, the officers of the RTU – Astronomy Society organized an astrophotography competition. The said event was participated by astronomy students and faculty of both Rizal Technological University and New Era University. Global Astronomy Month is celebrated every April by astronomers worldwide. The event was done to commemorate that we are one people under one sky. It brings ideas to... Read More...
This photo was captured in Feb 6, 2016 in Caguas, Puerto Rico. It's a compilation of 50 frames of 60 sec each. I used the astronomical equipment Meade LX90, Celestron Advance VX Mount, Canon Rebel EOS 450D XSi, Orion Autoguider. I used editing software PixInsight and GIMP for processing and plate solving and image annotate. Saturday, May 14 , we joined other astronomy clubs in the country and the world in celebrating the International Astronomy Day. Despite the bad weather, we managed to give people the chance to see The Moon and Jupiter through a telescope. https://www.facebook.com/astronomie.valcea/ https://astronomievalcea.wordpress.com/ Read More...
Members of Southern Maine Astronomers had a solar party for the public at LL Bean in Freeport, Maine. Many members brought telescopes, so we had many types for the people to look at the sun through and also a small radio telescope to hear the radio waves from the sun and satellites. I brought NASA Night Sky materials for people who were waiting to look through telescopes to make solar and lunar eclipses. We had many visitors and they all loved looking at our own star, the sun. A small group of people gathered at the observatory for a viewing of the Transit of Mercury. We had amazing views from several telescopes. It was very special to me because my Nepali friend, who shared the skies in Nepal with me, was here in Maine to observe this event with us. It really felt like One People, One Sky!! :-) Read More...
Astronomical Society of Northern New England celebrated GAM SunDay by viewing the sun through my dobsonian witha with a white light solar filter because the observatory scopes were not working properly. We had a great view of some sun spots through my telescope. We also used some materials from the NASA Night Sky Network to make solar and lunar eclipses with visitors and members. Read More...
We at St.Philomena College, Puttur, affiliated to Mangalore University, India, set up our 6 inch reflecting type astronomical telescope and projected the Sun on white board and observed the rare celestial event - Mercury Transit on 9th of May from 4.45 pm onwards. we could see the "SUN SPOT" on the image of the sun and then a black dot - the mercury and its transition - as time pass. Enthusiasts - teachers, students & general public - gathered on that hot sunny evening time to watch the celestial event. Great day. Transit of Mercury Read More...
We held a Transit of Mercury viewing session using a Solarscope (simple projection device). We were lucky with clear skies all day, and despite our “low-tech” equipment, could make out a large irregularly-shaped sunspot, and the planet Mercury, clearly much darker and with a more definite circular shape compared to the sunspot. We had planned to use mirror projection as another way to view the transit (we had used this very successfully during the partial eclipse of November 2013) but on this occasion it was difficult to get a large enough and clear enough image. The light winds also made... Read More...
On 9th May 2016 we organized an event in the beautiful Schlosspark Laxenburg near Vienna. All visitors from the Schlosspark were invited to join and take a closer look through our telescopes and observe this rare event. A lot of interested people took the chance and informed themselves and observed the Mercury transit with us. We also had a lot of info material and posters we could use to explain the Mercury transit. Fortunately we had a really beautiful weather and a clear sky. Even a local TV reporter team joined us for a report and an interview. We made... Read More...
Like many others in Austria we offered to visitors and walkers in our local town park a look to the Mercury transit on 9th May 2016. We had fine weather and we showed at our local Johannes-Kepler-Observatory the sun in white light and h-alpha light. Even at our outpost outside the city of Linz we had a little observing team showing this event to people of the neighborhood. Many people thought they can look to Mercury using sun eclipse glasses. They have been surprised that Mercury was so small and so they have been happy to see our smallest planet crossing... Read More...
We had a very nice weather, contrary to expectations, and we could see from Ramillies the entry of Mercury within the Sun's disk. We also had the visit of a journalist from Le Soir newspaper. We were about 25 persons, also bikers who passed by our site..And I got sun burned. We noticed how difficult it is to take a picture with a H-alpha filter. But we enjoyed it all. Read More...
On May 2016, teachers and students from a public university and shool teachers in León, Nicaragua received talk about the transit of Mercury. Weather helped us with clear skies so afterwards they enjoyed to observed the Transit by themselves. ASAFILE members worked with the authorities of the University to explained to assitants of the talk about the causes of the transit, how often the transit occurs during this century, the double sunrise in the planet and its main characteristics.
