A wonderful sight you don't want to miss! The lunar eclipse last December 10 is a beauty. According to myths the moon was eaten by a snake, thus people shall chant "Bring back the moon!" But astronomers do know the answer why this incredible phenomenon takes place. Read More...
I've been making night sky videos to get more beginners to astronomy familiar with the night sky for about a year now. I present this in a way that most anyone, anywhere - including those living in light polluted cities and suburbs - can find objects to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsqrNpln8AM My goal with these is to educate others about the night sky, while simultaneously educating about light pollution reduction. That's the biggest issues I see on the horizon for amateur astronomers, and although there have been a few success stories, the proliferation of night-time outdoor lighting continues, mostly unabated. With these... Read More...
B irika !!! That’s the Swahili word used by teachers, students, and community members to name the teapot asterism in Sagittarius. With dark skies (magnitude 7 on the Great World Wide Star Count chart) it was great fun finding deep sky objects during a month-long teaching experience in northern Tanzania. In October I returned to Africa for a second year of teaching astronomy, optics and light. I shared my love of astronomy and left almost 250 pounds of equipment and resources with five secondary and two elementary schools on Mt. Meru (4,566 meters). Each of the seven schools received either... Read More...
Initial report from Chuck Ruehle and Telescopes to Tanzania project: November 9, 2011 The 2011 Telescopes to Tanzania trip was from October 4 to October 27 th . Upon arrival on the 5 th of October , Tareto Nassari and Pastor Fredrick Pallangyo greeted me at the airport and took me to the Guest House in Usa River. I spent the night there and collected up the resources that Mama was keeping for me. Last June, the Our Saviors, Oconomowoc and Fox point delegations carried about 125 pounds of equipment in for me. The Vernon delegation (arriving on October 6... Read More...

He was admitted to the engineering department of the University of Tehran in 2008,arguably the best technical school in his home country.During the time,he was ranked one and behind this dues also accomplished several research on CG.Near the beginning of his education, heidari thought that old fields and methods of engineering was no longer enough to reconcile Intelligence with his ability. This led to the development of his ideas and researchs. To all people living in Austria, or visiting Austria I strongly recommend a stop at Ars Electronica Center (AEC- http://www.aec.at ). On 6th of October 2011 the first digital TWAN (The World At Night) - exhibition has opened. http://www.twanight.org/newTWAN/news.asp?newsID=6067 The exhibition at the Ars Electronica Center is the first purely digital presentation of this project, a display of breathtaking photographs and videos of beautiful and historically interesting places all over the world. Shot against the night sky with stars and planets as their backdrop, these images show the world from a truly extraordinary perspective. More pictures of the opening and... Read More...

'Cosmos' on the Big Screen This may be the closest you'll ever get to being on the Planet Mars. See “Blues for a Red Planet”, an episode of the wildly-popular 1980 TV science series ‘Cosmos' hosted by Carl Sagan and presented by JPL Mars Rover Team Lead, Scott Maxwell. Scott will follow the epic episode with some slides and clips of Mars as seen from the Rovers that he commands here on earth. On stage will be the Mars Exploration Rover which will maneuver over and around volunteers from the audience. The kids are going to love it. The Rover... Read More...
By Fritz Lensch, OE3 FLB. This article was also published in “Der Sternbote” 8/2011 As the Perseids were not well observable visually this year – due to the full moon – we decided to count the meteors using our radio telescope. The principle is based on Radar, but with spatially separated emitters and receivers (so called forward scattering). Detecting radio reflections of meteors requires a powerful emitter located approximately 300 to 1000 km away sending with high power in the direction of the meteors. We used the station GRAVES ( http://www.satellitenwelt.de/spaceradar.htm#GRAVES ), which is a French space surveillance system used... Read More...
Wow, a new active region emerged at the limb of the Sun, and it exploded with fierce emotion, sending its charged particles toward our Home. And the people around the poles celebrated when a glorious celestial fireworks showed above them, and tons of films and RAM where used, rolled and saved, while the Auroras danced, arched and played for them. It was a giant sunspot, 1302 it was named and it was as large and big as four Earths; with its energetic dark eye looking at us, menacing, powerful, and barely tamed. As it crossed the disc of the Sun... Read More...
Members of the Harford County Astronomical Society, Bel Air, MD, had planned to set up telescopes and binoculars for a public viewing session. Since it was completely clouded out, we had indoor presentations and a tour of our observatory located at Harford Community College, Bel Air, MD. Even though the weather precluded a viewing session, we still had 21 visitors for the night and 12 club members. We gave out Sun Fact Sheets, Moon maps with moon fact sheets, NASA stickers, Kepler Bookmarks, Stereo Cards, EPOXI cards, Year of Solar System fact sheets, Citizen Scientist sheets and star charts. We... Read More...
On April 17, 2011, from 11 AM to 4 PM members of Harford County Astronomical Society, Bel Air, MD had a display set up at a local Earth Day event. Our focus for the day was Light Pollution and way to combat the issue. We gave out Good Neighbor Lighting materials to adults and gave children light pollution coloring sheets as well as space stickers to remind them to turn off lights so we can see the night sky. We also gave out Hubble lithos, Year of the Solar System information, comet bookmarks, EPOXI mission postcards, MESSENGER Mission stickers, NASA... Read More...

In the future I will write on this blog monthly reports on activities implemented in Serbia (my hometown Krusevac) in order to promote astronomy and science. In August we organized observation of meteor Perseid shower on Bagdala hill in the city. This is the darkest part within the city where it can be seen the night sky, and that light pollution does not affect the experience too much. The observations were on 12th and 13th August. There were about 18 observers and we have seen for both nights over 20 meteors in total. From the equipment we used refractor telescope... Read More...
This year's International Astronomical Camp “Letenka”, which is already a traditional annual event in the Southeastern Europe, was held from 21 st to 24 th of July. This was the 10 th time the camp was held and as one of the organizers, Aleksandar Zorkić, editor-in-chief of “Astronomski Magazin”, an astronomy magazine and web-site, said that next year's camp is also going to be jubilee 10 th . Everyone had great expectations from this camp, especially concerning the program. Let me say, here at the beginning, that the camp was excellently organized and that this year's organization was much better... Read More...

Everybody knows about the drastic changes that took place in Tunisia during the last months of this year and especially at the political and security level. However, with the strong will of amateur astronomers, members of Astronomy and Space Club Sidi Bourouis worked hard on organizing a scientific activity that is worth being part of activities related to “International Astronomy Month”. April 2, 2011 Amateur astronomers organized a conference that dealt with problems of light pollution, nocturne vision, and the accompanying nocturne animals such as insects, bats, and owls. The conference introduced by Mr. Girard Sirven, member of National Association... Read More...

Volunteers of Sterrenwacht Presik heaven put up six telescopes and gave explanations to the audience and interviews to several journalists. More than sixty people turned up to see a beautiful dark red Moon rise over the skyline of Arnhem.
