The Night We Observed The Longest Lunar Eclipse

As each year features at least two lunar eclipses, many of which are partial or penumbral where the moon grows slightly darker, the night of July the 27 th marked the longest total lunar eclipse in 83 years! This mesmerizing astronomical event coincides with the opposition of Mars reaching its closest approach to Earth since 2003. Luckily for the 250 participants, the Lunar Eclipse lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes and was best observed from the Middle East. The observation camp took place in Bethlehem on Moon Hill to ensure zero light pollution and clear gazing opportunities. Awad Hamad, a... Read More...

The opposition of Planet Mars - Caguas, Puerto Rico

I include the results of the astrophotography that we made live from the observation of the opposition of Mars on July 27, 2018 at 8:30 pm from Caguas, Puerto Rico. The astrophotographers are Fernando Roquel Torres and Erica Correa Felix. In this photo you can show how the dust of the sahara can affect the captures, also the red planet was covered by a storm of dust which can be perceived in the photograph. That did not prevent observing its polar ice caps and regions of the planet. Read More...

Mars Opposition & Total Mooneclipse

On July 27 2018 we had a public viewing event at our local observatory. It was a thrilling event, because at the beginning many clouds in southeast blocked the view. But "hope dies last" and the sky cleared more and more. About 1000 people visited our small observatory. Of course we had some portable scopes to offer a view to the moon and the red planet. Before and in between we could offer Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. Mars was not so pretty because at our latitude he is very low and the seeing is bad. However everybody was happy and... Read More...

Opposition of Mars

Even with the threat of storms in the forecast, we headed out to our observing site. The clouds stayed away so we could share with the public all the visible planets. The star of the show was using the NexYZ so the public can take photos with their cell phones. It was a pretty good turnout. A neighboring astronomy club member came by to help out. It was nice to have the extra telescopes on hand for the public. Read More...

My First Attempts of Photographing the Moon

by Aidan Kaminsky

For several weeks now, I have been trying to attempt amateur astrophotography. I tried to build a cell phone adapter mount to install on my telescope and take pictures, but the mount I built was not very efficient. After, I bought a Gosky Cell Phone mount and installed it on my refractor telescope. I took some pictures of the moon over a span of two days with my old iPod, which is why the pictures aren't of the best quality, but I'll be attempting to take some photos with my newer iPhone in the following week. These are few of... Read More...

bright star-like light from lagoon nebula area

Hi All, Wondering if anyone else saw a bright star-like light coming from very close to or from the Lagoon Nebula. I observed this light at about 9:50pm CDT. Once I saw it it stayed bright about 1 minute and then dimmed over a period of about 20 seconds. The light was not moving relative to Saturn which is just north of Sagittarius so I am quite sure it was not a satillite. It was about as bright as Saturn and was redish, similar to Scorpius a* Antares. Very interesting, hope someone else saw it and can confirm my observation.... Read More...

Astronomy & Night Sky Summer Series

We started the event with 3 Astronomy 101 presentations with 253 participants in attendance. During the presentations we gave an overview of the objects visible in the night sky and telescope etiquette. There were also resources avaialble in the lobby before and after the presentations. For the telescope viewing we had perfect weather and clear skies. Participants were able to view Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, 4 of Jupiter's Moons and Saturn. Mars was starting to rise as the event was coming to an end but was visible with the naked eye. While participants were waiting in the telescope lines, they could... Read More...

Opposition of Saturn

We started off viewing Venus, then Jupiter. We went to the Moon then finally Saturn. I explained the best time to view the Moon when it isn't so full with my pan of flour. We made some craters and shined the flashlight at different angles to show how the shadows and light can make the surface more interesting. We also went over why we can't see the flag on the Moon, and why we only see one side of the Moon. The demos really helped them understand their questions. It was so cool I had a prop for almost every... Read More...

Public Star Party

I hosted a star party for the public on June 1st, 2018 for people in my community in Dubai, UAE. Like with any public event in Dubai, it was very diverse, and roughly 30 people showed up! Since we're in the city, we focused on planetary & lunar observations. Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars (coming up late) were more than enough to make people say "WOW!". Being Ramadan, the event started later in the evening (10pm), most people stayed about 30 minutes or so to observe Jupiter, Saturn, The Moon, and some brighter stars (like Arcturus, Antares, and Vega) - we...
