But isn’t light a good thing? Of course it is – but only if it is properly designed and installed. Many times external lighting is installed such that it wastes its energy output into the night sky – where it has no use.
Does it matter? You bet it does! Energy waste is a waste of our money and of our finite energy resources. In addition there are also issues related to animal and human health. When was the last time you saw the Milky Way? As stated by an IAU resolution the enjoyment and contemplation of the firmament should be considered a fundamental socio-cultural and environmental right of all citizens.
